      • Job Description:
        • Investigates fires by examining premises; inspecting electrical wiring, fuse boxes, appliances, and electrical equipment; interviewing firefighters, owners, neighbors, contractors, etc.; operating a hydrocarbon indicator to determine if accelerants are present; sending evidence to the laboratory for analysis; observing autopsies and talking with coroners and pathologists; reviewing reports and other information, and talking with other Fire Marshals, informants, and other police officers, etc., to determine if there are similarities with other fires which are current or solved in order to determine cause and origin and, if appropriate, to develop suspects.
        • Investigates fire hazards by inspecting homes, businesses, etc., for hazards such as gas leaks, debris, and defective outlets and wiring; and establishing ownership of property containing fire hazards.
        • Completes paperwork by completing thorough reports such as initial investigative reports, criminal reports, lab reports, and property record reports; composes memoranda and letters to obtain information in response to requests for information, and to inform individuals of procedures, complaints, and compliance requirements; types fingerprint cards to record information on an arrested person; completes approval cards to verify that installation meets regulations; and prepares disposition information.
        • Maintains files by maintaining an activity log; organizing, labeling, indexing and purging necessary files; retaining photographs and other information on known arsonists; and keeping a file of pertinent information on all fires for future reference.
        • Arrests violators by obtaining warrants, taking into custody utilizing proper police procedures and appropriate force necessary to subdue and restrain the individual(s), searching for weapons, reading rights, securing in the car, escorting to jail, and completing necessary paperwork.
        • Testifies in court as an expert witness by reviewing information, notes, and other investigative material to prepare; establishing competence; presenting evidence; responding to questions; and assisting the prosecution as needed.
        • Coordinates local resources by developing and maintaining a rapport with fire chiefs, area firefighters, local police officers, rescue workers, etc.
        • Maintains proficiency and increases expertise in general and fire investigative techniques, operation of equipment used in fire investigations, knowledge of flammable and combustible liquids and incendiary devices, etc., by attending mandatory training and attaining necessary qualifications; maintaining fitness in order to carry out responsibilities on the position, including climbing over rubble and shoveling debris; staying current on court decisions, laws, Department regulations, and regulations pertaining to fire investigation, evidence preservation, building codes, etc.; attending out-service training; and exchanging information with other investigators.
        • Instructs and performs public relations duties by making speeches and presentations, conducting classes, assisting other departments, attending banquets, and coaching Alternate Fire Marshals.
        • Supervise, assist and train 7 subordinate fire investigators serving Troop C. Technically review and approve investigative reports
        • Authored over 603 Fire Origin and Cause Investigations of which 256 were classified Accidental, 165 Undetermined, and 182 Arson. Assisted other investigators with an additional 847 Fire Origin and Cause Investigations.
